San Diego State University Aztec Aquaplex
San Diego, CA
The new Aquaplex completes SDSU’s recreational sports complex that includes Tony Gwynn Stadium, the softball fields and new tennis facilities. The objective was to design a facility that would become a bold and inviting destination. A student-funded project with a mandate to be environmentally sensitive, the energy efficient design includes abundant daylighting and natural ventilation. Durable building materials include cast-in-place concrete and patterned concrete masonry provide for minimum maintenance. Glass walls and paving patterns enhance the transition from indoor areas to outdoor swim areas. Concrete masonry in a combination of natural colors and multiple surface treatments form the building volumes. The masonry completes the volumes and becomes exposed in various areas of the interior spaces.
